2 The ancient “ Candachar,” or Police of the country are Kept up un-
3 changed.
4 The Silladar Horsemen in their best days were never remarkable for.
5 the true Military spirit ; but they are now well clothed and armed ;
6 and their horses, which Lord William Bentinck described on personal
7 observation “to be for the most part both in size and quality unfit for
8 the service,” are now so much the reverse in both respects, that a por-
9 tion of the Remount of the Madras Presidency is furnished from the
10 produce of the Silladar mares, It is doubtful, however, whether the
11 Mysore breed of horses, improved though ‘it be, will be able to hold its «
12 ground much longer against the cheap and powerful déscription of
13 animals which the Australian Colonies appear capable of supplying to
14 almost any extent.
15 The Silladars muster 2,784 men of all ranks, with 2,744 horses ; and
16 are formed into seven regiments. Their monthly expense, including all
17 establishments, is Rupees 65,134.
18 The Barr, or Mysore Infantry, muster 2,269 bayonets, and their
19 monthly expense is Rupees 19,050.
20 No attempt is made to teach either of these bodies any thing beyond
21 the most elementary principles of drill. In fact, their multifarious and
22 incessant duties would prevent it ; but they are of immense aid to the
23 Police, and relieve the regular troops of the Company from every species
24 of Treasure and Jail duty.
