18, Much important work was done in tunnelling in the Improvements in the Mayo
Mayo Mines during the year. Thirty tunnels of various ™™*
lengths, aggregating 1,208°5 running feet, were driven for the
purpose of opening out new working space, bringing the tram-
way nearer to existing workings, and improving the ventilation.
The. new tramway tunnel was extended 122 running feet and
the rail-head pushed forward 340 feet. The drift in No. 20
Buggy Mine, was extended 96 feet, and is eventually to lead
out of the hill on the northern slope, when the ventilation of
the whole mine will be greatly benefited. In Thomson’s |
tunnel, which has been in existence for many years, and the
roof of which had become unsafe, a length of 110 feet more
of masonry and log lining has been put in, and about 110 feet
more is needed to render it quite safe, this being the way by
which all persons on foot enter the mine. New stations were
made along the new tramway, and 17 new wagons and 17 new
sets of wheels, were added to the tramway rolling stock. The
. cost of mine improvements, and of maintaining the tramway
and rolling stock amounted to Rs. 13,946 in 1893-94, and to
Rs. 13,436 in 1894-95. The protective works and fresh water
channel in the Khewra gorge were kept in order at a cost of
Rs. 2,210 against an expenditure of Rs. 2,813 in the preceding
year. During the current year the new water-supply system,
by means of pipes and hydrants, which is being laid down at
the joint cost of the North-Western Railway and the Salt
Department, will be ready.
