in the number of pans (53) licensed and at work during the -
past year as compared with 1893-94, the following being the
details for each cluster. ‘

In the despatches by railway to Delhi there is, as com-
pared with all previous years, a large decrease. In the consign-
ments along the North-Western Railway there is, compared -
with, 1893-94, an increase of about. 2,000 maunds. The quan-
tity sent wid the Oudh and Rohilkand Railway is small in
both years (nfaunds 1,232 in 1893-94 and maunds 1,200 in
1894-95). Along the East Indian Railway, really to Cawn-
pore alone,.the quantity despatched has increased from 49,685
maunds in 1893-94 to maunds 70,159 in 1894-95, and to Pili-
bhit there is also a large increase, viz, from maunds 2,715 in
1893-94 to maunds 11,127 in 1894-95. These two markets
really account for the whole of the increase of the year. They
serve the country where the hold of Sultanpuri salt in the
liking of the people is strongest and has lasted longest, so
that as soon as the price of Sambhar rose in the preceding
year Sultanpufi got a footing again and found ready sale.
The bookings by road to the surrounding and neighbouring -
tracts in the Delhi, Karnal, Gurgaon, Rohtak and Hissar dis-
tricts have remained practically stationary, being maunds 3,225
in 1893-94 and maunds 8,753 in 1894-95.
On the subject of the increase of the business done, and
, the distribution of trade in Sultdnpuri salt during the past two
"years, the Assistant Commissioner of the Division says— The
areas of consumption of Sultdnpuri salt are as follows :—(1)
the Punjab in the neighbourhood of the salt sources; the
trade with this area is confined to the neighbourhood ‘of the
salt sotrces, and is not large: (2) the Dehra Dun ‘area; the
whole of the salt booked to Sahdranpur by railway passed for
consumption into the Dehra Din and the hills north of Dehra
Din: (3) the Rohilkand and Kumaun districts ; the trade
