The issue of salt that paid excise duty to the British Gov- Decrease in receipts exe
ernment decreased by maunds 3,61,950, or 34:17 per cent, —_Pisine®
owing to the revival of the trade in Sambhar salt, and the gross
realizations diminished by Rs. 9,44,116, or 34°02 per cent., as
compared with those of 1893-94. Both the quantity of excised
salt and the gross revenue were however very greatly in excess
of those for many years previous to 1893-94, owing to the
impetus that the trade received in the North-Western Provinces
and Oudh markets by the scarcity of Sambhar, which began to
be felt in 1893-94. During the current year (1895-96) however,
the Pachbadra salt trade will be found to have completely reced.
ed to the position it held prior to 1893-94. Compared with 1893-
94 excise duty shows a decrease of Rs, 9,04,875; sale price a
falling off of Rs. 34,167, the rate in both years being one anna
and a-half a maund; and miscellaneous revenue a falling off of
Rs. 5,074, because of the smaller quantity of through-tratfic salt
sent away. The net revenue amounts to Rs. 16,65,819, as
compared with Rs. 26,48,427 in the previous year, showing a
diminution of Rs. 9,82,608, equal to 37°10 per cent.
Fixed charges are less than in the foregoing year by Rs. 896, Decrease in fixed
for the following detailed reasons :—Jnereases (1) Rs. 129 under
the head of clerks, due to the posting to tke source of a third
grade instead of a fourth grade clerk; (2) Rs. 52 in inspectors
and petty officers; (3) Rs. 37:in the charge for medical establish-
ment; and (4) Rs. 303, exchange compensation allowance granted
by the Government of India to a Superintendent. Decreases
(1) Rs. 1,208, salary of Superintendent and Assistant Superin-
tendent, because of an officer being on deputation at the source
in 1893-94 to assist in the issue of salt; (2) Rs. 209 under ser-
vants and guards from ordinary causes such as leave, et cetera.
The contingent expenditure of the division has increased nd increase in contingent
by Rs, 39,388, which is more than accounted for by the increase — “P™8** **Plained.
of Rs. 41,505 in manufacturing charges, great efforts having
.been made during the year (1) to meet the suddenly increased
demand for Pachbadra salt in the North-Western Provinces and
Oudh markets, and (2) to increase the quantity of extracted and’
‘stored salt, the scarcity of which in 1893-94 caused great inconve-
nience and no small apprehension that the issue of salt would
have had to be suspended temporarily. Omitting manufacture,
mention of which will be made ina future paragraph, the fol:
lowing notes explain the increases and decreases in eontingent
outlay during the past and the preceding years :—Jncreases (1)
