REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
REVIEW BY SECTIONS. Was as regards fodder and water a favorable year for the Bun-
-PACHBADRA. jarahs. They seemed satisfied with the salt they purchased
and with the treatment received at Pachbadra. I had no com-
plaints and they were given the best salt in the tract, as good
as was issued to the through-traffic trade. From my frequent
conversation with them I gathered that they wanted clean white
mature salt, and with this they were supplied. Their only and
constant lament was that they could not compete with the
through-traffic trade.”
57. During the year maunds 1,42,500 duty free salt were
removed by the Jodhpur Darbar against, maunds 1,45,000 in
the preceding one, so that in 1893-94 maunds 5,000, and in
1894-95 maunds 7,500 lapsed. The removal and sale of the
salt at Pachbadra is entrusted by the Darbar to contractors
who pay into the Government sub-treasury at the salt source
at the rate of Rs 2-8-0 per maund, which. indudes the price
{one and a-half annas per maund) belonging to the British
Government, and the Darbar duty of Rs. 2-6-6 per maund.
The contractors must not charge purchasers more than Rs, 2-8-0
per maund and must not sell any of the salt outside of Mar- |
war. Their profit is a commission of Rs. 2 per cent. allowed
by the Darbar. So farascan be known none of the duty free
salt is removed beyond the State. The duty free salt was re-
moved by road and by rail in the past two years in the follow-
‘ing proportions :—
In 1393-94, by road maunds 5,2,408 ; by rail maunds 92,592 ; total maunds 1,45,000
In 1804-95 4, =, 70,795) 71,705 gS, = 442,500
Out of the salt removed by rail last year maunds 66,600
were consigned to Jodhpur for use in the city and in the coun-
try north of it.
