SALT REYENUE DEPARTMENT FOR*THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1893-94,
year, owing to the failure of manufacture, exhaustion of stocks
and high prices, the issue of Sambhar salt for consumption
in Rajputana and Central India is less than it has been for
many yéais past. . ;
8. Officers of the Department were deputed during the
year into Udeypur to visit the salt tracts and closed salt
works in that State. The report made was on the whole satis-
factory. Very few indications of salt manufacture were dis-
covered, and the observance of the salt agreement is much
more effective than it was last year. The Sargot and Kucha-
wan salt jhils were also periodically visited, as also was
the salt lake at Kachor-Rewasa, and satisfactory reports were
received regarding them. The khar tracts and soda factories
in Jeypur were also visited with the same results. No other
deputations were sent into Native States during the year. Owing
to the condition of the tracts at the close of the rainy season
it was not deemed necessary to have them inspected this year.
Ever since the salt agreements were made, the Native Dur-
birs have, with few exceptions, effectively suppressed illicit
salt manufacture in their respective territories.
9. Detailed information and statistics, completed to: the
close of 1892-93, were furnished last year regarding the work-
ing of the system for the collection of Northern India salt
revenue by post offices. It will be remembered that whereas
prior to the Ist of October 1892 the salt revenue had been
collected for this Department free of charge, from that date
a fee of 8 annas per 100 rupees was imposed as a charge
on traders for the service rendered. The result of the levy
of this charge was that after the 1st of October 1892 the post
offices were very little resorted to, the total collections by
‘the post offices in the first half of 1892-93 (the free-of-charge
period) being Rs. 43,66,346, and in the latter half of that year
Rs. 6,36,065. The following comparative abstract shows how
the system has worked in 1893-94 and in the three preceding
years. In the year just ended only 18 post offices were resort-
ed to to receive the duty and price due upon maunds 19,336
of Punj&b Mines rock salt; 34 post offices collected the price
and duty upon maunds 52,241 of Sambhar salt; and 12 post
offices performéd the same service for maunds 7,970 of Pach-
badra salt. The total summed up for the entire Department
is 64 post offices employed against 286. in 1892-93, maunds
79,547 paid for against maunds 19,68,234 in 1892-93 and
maunds 32,25,360 in 1891-92, and Rs. 2,241,267 collected against
Rs. 50,02,411 in 1892-93 and Rs. 84,99,787 in 1891-92. In these
three years the treasuries: and sub-treasuries in Upper India
collected revenue for this Department on through-traffic salt as
follows: In 1891-92 Rs. 27,138,380, in 1892-93 Rs. 81,58,732, and
in 1893-94 Rs. 1,08,03,988.
