SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1895-96,
clearances for the past four years amount to maunds 20,21,660. BEVIEW BY SECTIONS,
The increase in thé busines ‘lone during the year in Punjab PURE
Mines rock salt is therefore due firstly to stocks having run very
low in the previous year, and secondly, to about maunds 95,472
of salt having been purchased during March to run into Kash-
mir and Jammu before the revenue farming contract expired in
April 1896.
17. To illustrate the relative state of the through-traffic Through-trafic and ordi-
and ordinary trade of the division the following comparative "7 "#4¢ compared.
abstract for the past four years is inserted: —

In 1892-93 the through-traffic business comprised 86*48 per
cent. of the entire trade of the division. In 1893-94 it amounted
to 87°84 per cent., and in 1894-95 to 86°60 per cent. This year,
that is in 1895-96, it amounts to 84°86 per cent. It would have
been greater but for the balance awaiting clearance for want of
railway wagons being high during the first nine months of the
year. Whenever this is the case the delay which results in for-
warding salt under the through-traffic system drives traders
temporarily to the ordinary system under which such delay
seldom if ever occurs, because the business done in this way is
comparatively small. Ordinary trade sales therefore increased in
the Warthganj Depét in 1895-96 by maunds 78,345.
18. Out of the total clearances in 1895-96, the quantity Distribution of traffic,
removed by railway amounted to 93°08 per cent., and that by
road and river to 6°92 per cent. The following statement shows
for the past four years the quantities cleared and removed by the
way, and by road and river, for consumption :—(1) withinrail-
Punjab, including Sind, Kashmir and Beluchistan, and (2)
in the North-Western Provinces, Oudh and Bengal.—
