3 for tours «nd transfers, and more rewards to captors of contra-
4 band Kohat salt. The suppression of smuggling, and the seizures
5 of salt effected, will be dealt with when the penal action of the
6 Department for ‘the year comes under consideration. Smug-
7 gling continues to decrease in the North Hazara frontier, and
8 there were this year no affrays with smugglers on that section
9 of the Indus Preventive Line.

23 Owing toits having become known that the Government
24 intended soon to increase the Kohat salt duty from 8 annas
25 per Lahori maund to Rs. 2, the sales in the latter two months
26 of the year increased largely, with the result that the state-
27 ment discloses. A. notification has since the close of the year
28 been issued by the Government of India announcing that the
29 Increase of duty above referred. to will come into effect
30 on the 13th of July 1896. The gross receipts are greater
31 than in 1894-95 by Rs. 76,025, and the net receipts are more
32 by Rs. 66,050. The total charges exceed those of the pre-
33 vious year by Rs. 9,975, the increase in fixed charges being
34 Rs. 921, and in contingencies Rs. 9,054. Of this latter sum
35 increased payments (consequent on the larger sales) of commis-
36 sion to Malks and Inamdars account for Rs. 8,704, and
37 travelling allowance for Rs. 226.
38 24. The following statement shows the total realizations
39 from Mandi salt, the cost of: the establishment maintained
40 by the British Government.at the two mines (Guma and Drang),
41 and the net revenue derived by the British Government and
42 the Raja of Mandi during the year under report and the three
43 preceding years :—
