gara in the estimation of dealers and consumers, these salts would
leave it no chance, for they are as cheap as, if not really cheap r
than, Pachbadra-in the Central Indian and Central Provin es
markets, Baragara being especially so since the opening of the
Godhra-Rutlam, and the Bhppal-Ujjein Railways.
49, The trade in ordinary rail-borne salt fell from maunds
6,268 to maunds 3,473, or by nearly 50 per cent. This was
due to the difficulty traders experience at Pachbadra in getting
any carriage for the conveyance of their own salt from the pits
to the railway station, and also to the fact that through-traftic
indents are despatched so promptly, satisfactorily, and, it may
be added, cheaply, for through-traffic is filled, carried a distance:
sometimes exceeding four miles from the pits to the station,
weighed, and consigned all for Re. 1-9 per 100 maunds, or three
pies per maund, for three times which rate the traders could
not so efficiently do this business for themselves, The following
table shows the distribution of ordinary rail-borne Pachbadra

This traffic has decreased by 44 per cent. Last year the
banjaras purchased only maunds 94,012 against maunds
1,68,758 in 1894-95. Regarding this traffic the Assistant Ccom-
missioner says :— It is hardly of any use to discuss the vari-
ations in the quantities booked during the past two years to the
areas named in the table as our bookings are based on the des-
tination of the salt, as declared by the banjaras at the time
of purchase, and they systematically declare their purchases of
salt for sale in Central India, as they still think that we issue
the best salt in the tract to purchasers for Central India. It.
