As usual, excise duty includes the duty on Kohat salt and
the share due to the British Government of the duty realized
on the salt sold at the mines in the Mandi State. Sale price
includes the price at which salt was sold, apart from the duty, .
at the Punjab Mines, and at Sambhar, Didwana, Pachbadra and
Falodi in Mdjputdna. Fees, cesses and fines comprise (1) all
license fees collected in the Internal Branch, (2) the Hakimi
cess levied on salt sold atthe Sultanpur salt works, and (3)
all miscellaneous collections, including the charge made for
filling and clearing through traffic salt at Warthganj in the
Punjab Mines Division and at Sambhar and Pachbadra in R4j-
putana.
The gross realizations amount to Rs. 1,87,61,079. These
exceed the realizations of 1895-96 by Rs. 1,48,072, but fall
below those of 1894-95 by Rs. 6,16,611. The increase in the
revenue of the year under review, as compared with that of
1895-96, is due to larger sales of salt at Sambhar and Pach-
badra. The total charges of the year are less than those of
1894-95 and 1895-96, by Rs. 51,459 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.
These figures exclude treaty payments. Compared with 1895-
96, there was an increase of 'Rs. 4,920 under establishment, a
decrease of Ks. 30,453 under excavation and manufacture of salt,
and an increase of Rs. 20,533 under contingent and miscella-
neous charges. e net realizations of the year exceeded those
of 1895-96 by Rs. 1,53,072, but were less than those of 1894-
95 by Rs. 5,65,152. Excluding treaty payments, the incidence
of charges on receipts during 1896-97 amounts to 6°42 per cent.
as compared with 6°50 per cent. during the previous year, and
