Decrease under contin-
gent charges,
The gross receipts fall below those of 1895-96 and 1893-
94 by Rs. 2,50,397 and Rs. 1,18,675, respectively, but are more
than those of 1894-95 by Rs. 4,75,938. Compared with 1895-
96, there is a falling off under all three heads of revenue, of
Rs. 2,42,516 under salt duty, of Rs. 4,546 under price of salt,
and of Rs. 3,335 under miscellaneous collections. These fluctua-
tions will be explained further on when the trade of the Divi-
sion is being dealt with. The net receipts are less than those
of 1895-96 by Rs. 2,47,299 ; more than those of 1894-95 by Rs.
4,71,887 ; but again less than those of 1893-94 by Rs. 1,36,764.
The percentage of charges on receipts amounted to 6°45 during
the past year as compared with 6°21 during 1895-96.
Under the head of charges the expenditure of the past year
amounted to Rs. 3,36,963 as compared with Rs. 3,40,061 during
1895-96, or a decrease of Rs. 3,098.
In fixed charges there was an increase of Rs. 2,883, the
expenditure of 1896-97 being Rs. 1,70,253 as compared with
Rs, 1,67,370 during 1895-96. This may be explained as fol-
lows :—There was an increase of Rs. 644 on account of the pay-
ment of the annual increment tothe Assistant Commissioner ;
an increase of Rs. 1,329 in the pay of Inspectors, Kotgushts and
Jamadars, owing partly to a larger number of Inspectors having
been posted to the Division and partly to the payment of com-
pensation for dearness of food-grain to kotgushts and jama-
dars ; an increase of Rs. 200 on account of vernacular clerks
owing partly to the full strength of vernacular clerks having
been maintained throughout the year and partly to the pay-
ment of compensation for dearness of food-grain to clerks of the
lowest grade ; and an increase of Rs 6,161 on account of ser-
vants and guards and medical establishment, owing to the pay-
ment to those entitled to it, of compensation for dearness
of food-grain. On the other hand, there was a decrease of
Rs. 5,451 in connection with Superintendents and Assistant Sup-
erintendents and English clerks owing to officers of lower grades
having been posted to the Division during the year.
The entire expenditure under contingencies amounted to
Rs. 1,66,710, as compared with Rs. 1,72,691 during 1895-96 ora
