The principal bookings of the trade of the past year were
as follows :—
Maunds 77 823 tothe Kohat district.
3 91,390 to the Bannu -
6 2,27,104 to the Peshawar ,,
- * 25,440 to Afghanistan, and
” 54,956 to Swat and Buner.
The bookings to itdependent territory form a small propor-
tion of the total sales, but probably a good deal of the salt
booked to British districts was exported.across the frontier
later on, particularly in the case of the Peshawar district.
Pack carriage appears to be exclusively used for the removal
of salt from these mines. During the past year the animals
so employed comprised 37,693 camels, 65,157 bullocks, and
67,329 donkeys,
The collections at the mines fell below those of 1895-96 by
Rs. 1,12,656, and were also tess than the figures of 1894-95
and 1893-94. This was of course owing toa falling off in the
issue of salt compared with those years.
.The total charges of the mines during the year under
report amounted to Rs. 1,10,057 against Rs. 70,852 in 1895-96,
or an increase of Rs. 39,205. Under the head of establish-
ment and contingencies there was an increase in expenditure of
Rs. 16,332, due to an addition of four officers (including a
Superintendent and an Assistant Superintendent) and 182 men
to the establishment in consequence of the enhancement of the
duty. There was also an increase of Rs. 22,873 in payments
to Maliks and others for the same reasons. Sanction to this
extra expenditure was conveyed in letter No. 25465.R., dated
the 12th June 1896, from the Government of India, Department
of Finance and Commerce, to the Government of the Punjab.
In comparison with 1895-96, the net revenue of the mines
fell from Rs. 2,37,248 to Rs. 85,387, a difference of Rs. 1,51,861.
This was owing partly to less salt having been taxed and
partly to larger expenditure, the reasons for which have been
explained.
