REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTUERN INDIA
but ina much greater measure to a large proportion of the
quantity manufactured having been obtained from walled en-
closures. The salt of these enclosures is not only the best
in quality, but also the cheapest to manufacture, as extraction
is easy, the leads are short, and storage occurs on the edges:
of the pans.
34, The next statement shows the stock of salt in hand,
the quantity manufactured (including excess discovered on
elearance of heaps), the issues (including free deliveries and
deficits found in heaps cleared), and the closing balance of stock

Result of clearance of
heaps.
The past year opened with a stock in hand of maunds
63,11,953, and closed with a quantity of maunds. 55,24,638, or a
deficiency of maunds 7,87,315. The additions made to stock.
during the year are much below the figures of 1895-96, while’
the issues are larger: yet the year closed with a substantial
balance exceeding a year’s supply. Owing to the deficient
rainfall of the monsoon of 1896 the Lake is dry and manufac- ,
ture will not be resumed till probably about October or Nov-
ember 1897, so that the value of the balance is not as great as
it would have been under more favourable circumstances.
Still it exceeds a year’s supply and I do not anticipate any
difficulty in meeting all demands till manufacture recom-
mences.
