SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1896-97.
1895. During the latter half of the year the ordinary rates REVIEW BY SECTIONS.
for storage were reverted to. DIDWANA.
Two heaps of salt, which were manufactured during 1895-96, Result of clearance of
were cleared by sale during the year. They were estimated ™?*
to contain maunds 2,57,996; but the actual outturn amounted
to maunds 2,87,774, or an excess of maunds 29,778, equivalent
to 11°54 per cent. This result is fairly satisfactory. The
manufacturers receive payment for all excesses which occur
in heaps cleared, so that they are paid for every maund of salt
which they produce and the Department sells.

The revenue of this division for the first two years entered Increase in receipts ox
in the table was abnormally large. Owing toa failurein
manufacture at the Sambhar Lake the price of Sambhar salt
was raised from 22 to 54 annas a maund early in 1893-94, and
again to 8 annas a maund during the latter half of that year
and the opening months of 1894-95. This resulted in a demand
for Pachbadra salt to take the place of Sambhar, and an abnor-
mal increase occurred in the revenue of the Salt Source. During
the past two years conditions of trade have been normal both
at the Sambhar Lake and at Pachbadra, The realizations of
the year under report amounted to Rs. 13,26,610 against
Rs. 11,89,102 in 1895-96, or an increase of Rs. 1,37,508. This
improvement is distributed under all three heads of revenue—
excise duty, sale price and miscellaneous collections—and is due
to the sale ofa larger quantity of salt. Particulars in regard to p
the improvement in the trade will be found in the next para-
graph.
The charges of the division during the year under report
amounted to Rs. 1,13,573 in comparison with Rs. 1,12,153 in
1895-96, or an increase of Rs. 1,420.
Under fixed charges the expenditure amounted to Rs. 44,888 Decrease in fixed, and in-
compared with Rs. 45,605 in 1895-96, or a decrease of Rs. 717. crease. i, contingent
This difference is explained thus:—There was an increase, (1) Pence
of Rs. 550 in consequence of the Assistant Commissioner hav-
ing drawn an anuual increment, and (2) of Rs. 88 under Inspec-
tors and petty officers owing to fluctuations in connection with
leave vacancies. And there was a decrease, (1) of Rs. 1,193
on account of an Assistant Superintendent having been posted
to the Source in the room of a Superintendent, and (2) of
Rs. 162 under servants and guards resulting from variations in
Jeave allowances.
