Closure of the Falodi Salt
Source,
REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
There were no sales of duty paid salt at Falodi during the
past four years. The issues were only of duty free salt to the
Jodhpur Durbar,
The realizations under sale price of salt, the only head of
revenue, amounted to Rs. 2,812 during the year under report
against Rs. 1,986 in 1895-96, or an increase of Rs. 826. This
was due to the Durbar having taken maunds 15,000 of salt
compared with maunds 10,591 during 1895-96.
Fixed charges show a decrease of Rs. 90 in comparison with
the figures of 1895-96. This was due to a falling off in expen-
diture of Rs. 159 in connection with the posting of an Inspector
of lower grade to the Source, partly counterbalanced by a
payment of Rs. 69 made to subordinates on account of compen-
sation for dearness of food grain. Under contingencies there
was anincrease of Rs. 262 owing to a charge of Rs. 246 for
filling up salt brine wells and for salt discovered in excess in
a heap cleared, and to larger expenditure, amounting to Rs. 16,
under minor heads of contingencies.
The net revenue of the Source amounted to Rs. 832 compar-
ed with Rs. 178 in 1895-96. This was owing to a larger
quantity of salt having been sold during the past as compared
with the previous year.
The next statement shows the stocks and issues of salt at
the Source during the past two years :—

An excess of maunds 4,019 was discovered in a heap of salt
cleared during the year. The manufacturers will be duly paid
for this quantitv. Some payments have already‘ been made,
but a number of men migrated temporarily to Sindh after the
failure of the rains of 1896, and can only be paid when they
return at the commencement of the monsoon of 1897.
The Jodhpur Durbar is entitled to receive 15,000 maunds
of duty free salt annually from this source for consumption
within the State. During the past year the full quantity
issued. On each maund of this salt the Inspector in charge
of the Source realized a charge of Rs. 2-9-6, namely, three annas
on account of the Departmental sale price and Rs. 2-6-6
on account of the Raj duty levied by the Durbar. Collections
of Raj duty were remitted weekly to the Hakim of Falodi for
credit to the Durbar, and the total realizations during the year
under this head amounted to Rs. 36,093-12-0.
Under the orders of the Government ‘of India this Salt
Source is to be closed and the establishment withdrawn as
soon as the quantity of salt in stock has been disposed of.
The stock balance at the close of the past year amounted to
maunds 90,336. Assuming that the full quantity of duty free
salt deliverable (maunds 15,000) is taken yearly by the Durbar,
about six years will elapse before this balance is cleared.
After the close of the year under report I submitted a pro-
posal to Government for an earlier abandonment of this Source.
I suggested that the salt in stock should be made over to the
