steady progres iudustry during the past four
years. At an price of, say Rs. 6 a maund, the ten
lakhs of maunds of refined saltpetre produced during the year
represented a money value of about sixty lakhs of rupees. To
explain the apparent anomaly of a large increase in the
quantity of crude saltpetre worked up in refineries, coupled with
a decrease in the number of crude saltpetre licenses issued,
I may mention that 1895-96 was a particularly favourable year
for crude saltpetre manufacture, eand large stocks accumulated
which were used up during the past year.
