The curing process is followed for the most part during the
monsoon months, when it is difficult todry hides and skins
sufficiently, Hides are treated ina raw state. Their inner
surfaces are rubbed with powdered salt and they are allowed
to drain, after which they are rolled up and packed in barrels
for export. Skins (goats’ skins) are also treated while raw.
Their inner surfaces are covered with a paste of powdered salt
and they are then at once rolled up and packed in barrels. The
trade in these salted hides and skins is with both Europe and
America, but chiefly with the latter continent. The Cawapur
factory was visited by inspecting officers frequently during the
year, and every precaution was taken to ensure the safety of
the salt revenue.
