Half duty on salt booked
te Bikaner State.
Comparing issues with sales, the quantity of salt free of
duty actually issued to the Jodhpur State amounted to 2,06,446
maunds, as against 2,21,784 maunds sold during the year,
and as against 2,04,730 maunds actually issued in 1897-98.
Satisfactory arrangements are now made by the Jodhpur
Darbar to restrict its indents for duty free salt to the quan-
tity whieh may be actually necessary for the requirements
of the population of the State. The Rampur Darbar again
drew 1,000 maunds less than the quantity to which it is
entitled.
I am glad to be able to say that no instances came to
notice during the past year of duty-free salt thus issued
having been exported beyond the limits of the States within
which its consumption was authorized.
The actual issues of salt free of both price and duty
amounted to 40,710 maunds, compared with 40,410 maunds
that were indented for, and compared with 29,160 maunds
that were issued in 1897-98. A running account is kept with
the Darbaérs in connection with this salt. The increase in
the quantity indented for and issued during the year is owing
to the Jaipur Darbir having applied for the instalments of
two years together, 14,000 maunds ; and this was only partly
counterbalanced by the failure of the Bharatpur and Kotah
Darbdrs to indent for the salt due to them. The Bikaner
Darbér is entitled to’ receive a refund of half duty on the
quantity of full duty-paid salt consumed within the State
upto a limit of 20,000 maunds. During the year under
report 20,222 maunds of full duty paid salt were booked for
consumption in Bikaner territory: 16,152 maunds from Did-
wana and 4,070 maunds from Pachbadra. A refund of
