Credit Balance se =: 94,387
The credit balance amounts to Rs. 5,94,387, as compared
with Rs. 8,34,028 in 1897-98. During the year, a smaller
quantity of Sdmbhar salt was consigned to the States con-
cerned. Credit is taken only for such salt as may be declared,
at the time of issue from the salt sources underthe control of
this Department, to be for places in Native territory.
8. During the year under report the closed salt works
and salt-producing lands of the States of Kishangarh, Shahpura,
Udaipur, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Alwar, Jaipur, Kotah, Bundi
and Tonk in Rajputana, of Datia and Sampthar in Central India,
and of Bahawalpur in the Panjab, were inspected, with the
assent of the Political Officers and of the Darbars concerned,
by officers of the Department deputed for the purpose. The
provisions of the salt agreements were found to be adequately
observed in all of the States except Udaipur and Jaipur. In
these latter. some surreptitious manufacture of salt was
discovered, and the matter was brought to the notice of the
Residents. The salt marshes of Kachor-Rewdsa, Sargét and
Kuchaman, in the vicinity of the Sambhar Lake, were visited
from time to time by officers deputed from Simbhar, and the
results of the inspection were satisfactory. A Superintendent
of the Department was deputed to visit the open salt works at
Lonkaran Sarr in Bikaner territory, at which, under the terms
of the salt agreement with the State, a maximum quantity of
30,000 maunds of salt is permitted to be manufactured
annually for the consumption of the population of the State.
The terms of the agreement appear to be observed; and
inquiries made in the Bahawalpur State and in the British
districts in the Panjab marching with Bikaner territory showed
that the use of the salt is confined within proper limits. The
salt is sold at the works at Rs. 2 a maund; and as it is
not of superior quality, this price is sufficiently high, under
the precautions observed by the Darbar, to check its exporta-
tion beyond the borders of the State.
9. The receipts and charges of the Sambhar Lake Divi-
sion will be found detailed and compared with those of 1897-98
