REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
Though the manufacture of salt is but little affected by the
weather, yet the prosperity of the trade is greatly dependent
upon the annual rainfall. ‘The whole of the salt which issues
from the source is removed by read on carts and pack-animdals.
The trade routes traverse arid tracts of country, and the
nearest station (Kuchaman Read on the Sdmbhar Lake) of
the Rajputéna-Malwa Railway lies at a distance of 38 miles.
When the rainfall is favourable there is a sufficiency of
water and fodder, and salt can be transported without diffi-
culty; during a year of drought it is difficult for animals
to visit the source in the dry months in large numbers. The
country has suffered from drought for the past two years, and
the slight improvement in sales during the year under report
was due to the importation of grain in consequence of a partial
failure of the crops, salt having been exported asa return
freight.
The following is a comparison of the sales and aetuak
issues of salt:— .
