SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1898-99,
20. The following figures compare the sales of duty-paid
salt with the quantities actually cleared and despatched from
the source during the past two years :—

Mads. Mads.
Sales oe 4,24,827 6,00,574
Clearances - 4,26,007 5,75,998
The clearances exceeded sales in 1897-98 owing to the
despatch during that year of salt purchased during 1896-97.
The salt issued during the year under report was removed in
the following manner :—
Mds,
By railway si as _ 516,148 °
3 Toad ae ors aes 59,850
Total » 5,75,998
The road traffic is entirely in the hands of Banjara carrier
traders. The trade continues to decline; the quantity of salt
thus removed (59,850 maunds) having been less by 48,616
maunds than the average quantity (1,08,466 maunds) removed
in each of the past four years; and it is probable that it will
become still more insignificant in the near future.
Of the 1,70,000 maunds of duty-free salt sold to the Jodhpur
State during the year, 1,54,662 maunds were actually cleared
and issued. The salt was removed partly by railway and
partly by road.
The quantities of duty-paid and duty-free salt issued from
Pachbadra to the areas of consumption in the past two years
are compared below :—

Division. There was no change in the strength of the estab-
lishment employed in preventing the removal of salt from the
numerous and extensive deposits in the Luni river and the
channels of its delta. Forty-four persons were arrested during
the year for removal of quantities of salf which aggregated
maunds 5-24-13. As usual, free salt was issued during the year
to the population of the Luni delta, at the rate of six seers to
each person. In May 1898, maunds 6,146-10-0 were distributed
to 40,975 persons, inhabiting 39 villages in the Sanchér
pargana of the Jodhpur State.
22. The circumstances under which the establishment
posted at the Falodi salt source was withdrawn, and the salt
in store made over to the Jodhpur Darbar for sale, were fully
described in paragraph 55 of last year’s report,
The following figures show the sales effected by the offi-
cialgs of the Darbar, and the stock in hand at the close of the
year under review :—
