SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1898-99,
expedient to remove the brine from the mine. Arrangements ©/S-INDUS MINES.
for the employment of steam pumps for this purpose, under the
superintendence of officers of the North-Western Railway,
were made during the year, and pumping was commenged.
The work was in progress when the year closed and will
be completed during the current year. :
The Warcha Mine.—Work in this mine is carried on The Warcha Mine.
upon the same principles as in the Mayo Mine ; but the mineisa
small one, and up tothe present seven workings only have
been undertaken. The salt is of excellent quality, but the
seams are not very thick. ‘The mine entrance hitherto in use
was found to have become unsafe during the year, owing partly
to the proximity of the old mine, and partly to the hillside above
the entrance showing signs of giving way. A tunnel in a safe
part of the hill, to forma second entrance to the mine, was
commenced towards the endeof the year, and will be completed
shortly. The old mine also, through which salt has hitherto ,
been carried to thé depét, is in a dangerous state and a new
store-yard close to the new entrance to the mine is in process of
construction. When the new entrance and store-yard are ready,
the miners will cease to pass through any part of the old mine,
and it will then be closed up.
The Nurpur Mine.—This continued to be worked with qn xarpur Mine.
safety. A second entrance tothe mine was made during the
year, both as a measure of safety and to improve the ventila-
tion, A strong current of air now circulates through the mine.
The Kélabagh Quarries.—The open quarries on the slopeS he Kilabigh Quarries.
of the Saudagar hill continued to yield excellent salt in -
sufficient quantity.
28. There were no accidents during the year at the Warcha accidents at the mines.
and Nurpur Mines and the Kélabagh Quarries. Within the
Mayo Mine three accidents occurred, the result of salt-carriers
slipping and falling with their loads. In each of two cases a
fracture of aleg was sustained; and in the third, a finger was
broken. Outside the mine. one fatal and two minor accidents
occurred on the tram-line leading from the mine to the Khewra
Depot. In the fatal case, a brakesman negligently left an
empty truck standing on the line without securing the brake.
The truck was blown down the line by a high wind, and collided
with another empty truck which was being pushed up the line by
three men. {n the collision, two of the men were thrown clear of
the line, but the third was run over by the truck which he was
pushing, and compound fractures of his left leg, foot and hand
occurred. The injured man was immediately taken to the. hos-
pital at Pind Dadan Khan. Unfavourable. symptoms super-
vened, but neither the patient nor his relatives would permit ampu-
tation, and finally his relatives insisted on removing him to
his home, where his death occurred. The brakesman, from
whose negligence the accident occurred, was prosecuted crimi-
nally, and was convicted and punished. Inthe second case, two
’ brakesmen lost control of a running truck loaded with salt.
Losing their presence of mind, they failed to apply the brake,
and when the truck left the rails both men were thrown off, one
fracturing his legin the fall. In the third case, a man’s finger
was fractured between two tramway trucks,
29. The following quantities of rock salt were excavated in Excavation and cost of rock
the Division during thé past two years :— =
