REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
In the cis-Indus Mines Division, the rock salt which issues
is of so uniform a quality, and the arrangements for the
transaction of through traffic business are so efficient, that
nearly the whole of the salt cleared from the Khewra Depot is
indented for under the through traffic system, and the issues
under that system have increased with the expansion of the
trade. At Sdmbhar, owing to difficulties in connection with
manufacture resulting from scanty rainfall, the salt produced
has been of somewhat varying quality during the past two
years, and the effect has been a decrease in through traffic
business, as traders prefer to inspect the salt which is being
issued before concluding their purchases. A number of the.
principal traders at SA4mbhar have agencies in the North-
Western Provinces and Oudh, and they are therefore ina
position either to purchase direct at the source, or to indent for
it through their agents according to circumstances. With a
recurrence of good seasons better salt will be produced and the
through traffic transactions at the Lake will’ then increase. At
Pachbadra, the through traffic business is done so cheaply, that
with the exception of a small quantity of 210 maunds in 1897-98,
the whole of the rail-borne trade of the source was indented for
under that system during the past two years.
41. The revenue derived from through traffic salt during
the year under report amounted to Rs. 1,12,58,035, and pay-
ments were made as follows at treasuries, railway stations and
post offices :—

The widespread character of the payments is a convenience
to the Government, as money is placed at different points over
a very wid area, and the expense of remittance of treasure
from local treasuries at the salt sources is also saved.
Railway stations——The Indian Midland Railway is the
only line which receives salt revenue. Traders are permitted to
pay the duty and price of the salt which they require, into rail-
way stations at places where there is no treasury or post office
authorized to receive such revenue. The railway officials give
every assistance to traders, without charge, in preparing and
despatching indents ; and all revenue realized is promptly paid
without any deduction into the Jhansi Treasury. During the
