From the balance of salt in stock at the end of the year
(maunds 29,07,758) a deduction must be made of the quantity
(17} lakhs of maunds) to be delivered tothe Darbars in case
of the relinquishment of the lease of the Lake, and a balance
remains of 11,82,758 maunds, worth nearly three lakhs of
rupees at the present selling rate of 4 annas a maund.
The credit balance at the close of 1898-99 amounted to
Rs. 30,06,279, and this was reduced during the year under
report by a sum of Rs. 64,039.
The figures do not agree with those given in the reports
for former years, as it has been the practice to debit the account
with treaty and royalty payments calculated in the manner ex-
plained in paragraph 29 following. This appears to me to be
wrong and the results thus obtained to be misleading. The
Government have agreed to a fixed sum of Rs. 5,00,000 being
charged against the sale price of salt at the Réjputéna sources
instead of the full treaty and royalty payments made for the
lease of the Lake ; but in a profit and loss account of the work-
ing of the lease of the Lake it seems obvious that actual
payments on this account should be shown. In this year,
therefore, actual payments made for the lease of the Lake,
excluding only the Rs. 1,50,000 paid to Jaipur as compensation
for duties on salt surrendered by the Darbar, have been shown
in the account and the financial result has been materially altered
in consequence, Instead of a net credit balance of Rs. 58,28,209,
with a stock balance of salt worth nearly 64 lakhs of rupees,
as shown in the report for 1898-99, the result at the close of
1899-1900 is a credit balance of Ks. 29,42,240 only.
18. The receipts and charges of the Didwdna salt source
will be found in full detail in Appendix I. The following is
a summary of the figures of the past two years :—

Maunds 2,67,901 of salt were excised during the year as
compared with maunds 2,52,582 during 1898-99; an increase of
maunds 15,319. This explains the increase under the head of
“Duty.” Under “ Price of salt” the realizations fall below
those of 1898-99, the price prior to the ‘14th December 1898
having been one anna a maund, compared with nine pies a
maund since that date.
The decrease in the expenditure on establishment was due
to officers of lower grades having been posted to the souree
