principally to Bhiwani.

Maunds 11,26,396 of salt were sold during the year, com-
pared with maunds 7,70,574 during 1898-99; an increase of
maunds 3,55,822. This explains the increase in the realiza~
tions of duty and price; and as the quantity of. salt removed
under the through traffic system was much larger than in
1898-99, there was concurrently an increase in miscellaneous
revenue on account of the charge of three pies a maund made
for clearance of such salt by departmental agency.
The cost of the establishment was slightly larger during
the year than in 1898-99, owing to a smaller number of subor-
dinates having been absent on leave without allowances, The
increase in the expenditure under contingencies was due to
the expansion of the trade; larger sums having to be paid for
the purchase of salt from manufacturers.
23. The following is an abstract of the quantities of salt
manufactured, sold, and in store at the Pachbadra salt source

The monsoon of 1898-99 was a light one, as only 11°69
inches of rain fell ; but that of the year under report completely
failed, as the entire rainfalt was only ‘95 of an inch. Of this
quantity 88 cents fellin June, 5 cents in July and 2 cents in
December 1899. The drought was terribly severe ; the scanty
water supply of the source failed, and the mortality among the
Cattle in the surrounding country wasenormous. Nearly all the
water consumed by the establishment and others connected
with the Department at the source was brought by railway
from wells near the dry bed of the Luni river, a distance of
about ten miles.
As salt is manufactured from brine obtained from springs
‘about 12 feet below the surface, manufacturing operations
were not seriously affected by the failure of the monsoon, but
the quality of the salt, particularly in respect of the size of
