SALT REVENUE DEPARTMENT FOR THE OFFICIAL YEAR 1899-1901).
The figures show that during the eighteen years maunds
8,99,68,950 of salt were produced at an average cost of 3 annas
1 pie a maund, and that maunds 8,64,51,443 were sold at an
average price of 3 annas 7 piesa maund. There has therefore
been a net average profit on sales during this period of 6 pies
amaund. The results of the sales for the year under report, as
shown below, are, however, much less satisfactory. The aver-
age cost per maund of the 30,34,147 maunds of salt produced
has been 3 annas 8 pies a maund, and the average price realized,
per maund has been 3 annas 3 pies only. There has therefore
been an average loss per maund of 5 pies.

In 1898-99 the average cost per maund of the 61,95,701
maunds produced was 1 anna 11 pies and the average price
realized per maund for the 52,01,683 maunds sold was 3 annas
6 pies. The profit therefore amounted to 1 anna 7 pies a maund.
In 1897-98, which also was a very unfavourable year for
manufacture at Sambhar, there was a loss of 2 pies per maund
on the transactions of the year, though the transactions of the
16 years ending on the 31st March 1898 showed a profit of
6°76 pies a maund.
30. The Statement showing the total. expenditure which
must be recouped from the sale price of salt and the total
realizations fromthe sale price from 1870-71 to the close of
the year under report, which was published in previous
reports, has not been reproduced. Prepared, as it has hither-
to been; with a debit of treaty and royalty payments calcu-
lated in the manner indicated in the foot note of the statement
in the preceding paragraph, the statement as a profit and loss
account, seems to have no practical value; while if the actual
treaty payments be charged to the account, the result will
necessarily be a deficit. Under the orders of Government
the prices of Rajputana salt are not fixed high enough to cover
all these payments, some of which were pitched very high from
political considerations.
