REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA ~
Seventy-nine heaps of salt weré cleared during the year.
The estimated quantity of salt which they contained was
maunds 35,1!,334 and the actual quantity as ascertained by
weighment was found to be maunds 34,27,974. The deficit
therefore amounted of 2°37 per cent. ‘The quality of the salt
was so inferior that the loss from wastage was unusually large.
Of the 79 heaps, 28 contained salt made in the season of
1898-99, and these were cleared with a deficit of 1:20 per
cent., but the deficit in the case of the 51 heaps belonging to
the year 1899-1900 was as high as 3°31 per cent.
20. At Sambhar the sanctioned schedule provided for the
entertainment, in addition to the permanent staff, of tem-
porary preventive establishment, as required, within a maxi-
mum of Rs. 8,925 a year. The average annual expenditure
on temporary establishment did not, however, exceed Rs.
3,372 during the past 20 years, and the maximum grant has:
therefore been reduced to Rs. 4,500. The services of 15 of
the 20 gardeners, formerly employed: on the permanent es-
tablishment to look after the plantations kept up to provide
grass and stakes for the lake works, were dispensed with
during the year, and the five men retained will in future be
temporary servants. The sides of evaporation pans in the
kyars are being gradually pitched with stone instead of with
stakes and grass, and retaining walls in the lake bed are not
constructed to the same extent as in former years. The
demand for wood and grass has in consequence considerably
decreased,
