: REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA.
though it appeared to be. Of the ten Kyars at Sambhar,
brine was run into six and a part of seventh; the rest could
not be filled owing to the disappearance by evaporation of
the brine in the lake, The Kyar at Nawa was also filled,
but the depth of brine in the pans of all the works was less
than is necessary for the production of salt of good quality.
Extraction commenced early in October and was completed
in December, maunds 17,65,242 having been obtained and
stored during the interval. The entire quantity of salt ob-
tained from the Kyars during the year was maunds 41,72,404,
and very little of it was of good quality.
16. Maunds 20,04,095 of salt were manufactured during
the year in shallow evaporation pans constructed on the edge
of the lake, as compared with maunds 6,35,547 in Ig00-o1.
The increase in production was owing chiefly to the compa-
ratively favourable character of the monsoon of 1900, which
permitted of manufacture being carried on during the first
three months of the year, and also to- the production of this
kind of salt being vigorously pushed after the cessation of
the monsoon of 1g01. During April, May and June rgot,
4,628 pans produced maunds 10,10,315 of salt, and maunds
9,93,780 were obtained from 3,114 pans constructed after the
- cessation of the monsoon of 1go1. This description of
manufacture was proceeding when the year ended, but died
out shortly after its close. The quality of the salt was inferior
during both years. Inthe year under report the whole of it
was produced from subterranean brine, which contains inferior
salts in solution, and which is obtained from shallow wells dug
in the bed of the lake. In favourable seasons pans on the
lake edge are worked with lake brine, and the best salt is
manufactured in this way. Such brine, however, was not
available during the year under report.
17, No spontaneous salt could be obtained from the lake
during the year, as the quantity of brine in it was insufficient
for collection in the enclosures, which are constructed for the
purpose at convenient points in the bed of the lake when
conditions are favourable. This description of salt is easy to
win, and the inability of the Department to obtain it for some
years past is evidence of the unfavourable nature of recent
seasons,
18. The cost of the extraction and storage of Kyar salt
during the year amounted to Rs. 73,558, expenditure on main-
tenance and repairs to Rs, 19,075 and interest on the capital
invested in the works to Rs. 29,123. The incidence of the
total sum of Rs. 1,321,756 0n the outturt: of maunds 41,72,404
amounted to 5°60 pies a maund as compared with one anna*
and 5°87 pies a maund on the outturn of maunds 7,43,3¢6 in
1900-01. The accumulation of bittern and inferior salts in
the works has been large recently, and the cost of cleansing
the pans at the close of each season has been heavy in conse-
quence ; but, apart from this circumstance, the incidence of
the cost of Kyar salt fluctuates in accordance with the quan-
tity produced, as the works are extensive and designed for
the production of a large outturn under ordinarily favourable
conditions,
The work of pitching the sides of the pans of the Kyars
at Sambhar with stone was continued during the year, aud
Rs. 5,795 were expended under this head. Often Kyars, the
sides of the pans of six have been pitched, and only four now
® One anna was omitted by error in the Report for t900-02.
