REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
32. Article 11 of the Salt Agreement with the Jodhpur
State stipulates that in the event of the total realizations from
the salt sold at Didwana, Pachbadra and Falodi exceeding
in any year the charges properly debitable to those sources,
one-half of the excess shall be paid to the Darbar. The
financial result of the administration of the three sources is

The debit balance of 1900-01 amounted to Rs. 5,$9,699.
The less favourable result during the year under report was
owing partly to a smaller quantity of salt having been sold
to traders (maunds 14,16,666, value Rs. 1,02,194, against
maunds 14,64,835, value Rs. 1,07,251), and partly to an
increase in the fixed and contingent charges at Pachbadra and
Didwana (Rs. 2,11,453 against Rs. 1,65,950), which was
due principally to a larger quantity of salt having been pure
chased from manufacturers during the past year ae
14,45,530 against maunds 8,55,089).
33: The calculations in the Appendix of the price at
which salt should be sold at the sources in Rajputana show
that, during the 20 years which ended with 1901-02, maunds
9,98, 67,688 of salt were produced at an average cost of 3
annas a maund, and that maunds 9,61,24,340 were disposed
of at an average price of 3 annas and 7 pies a maund, leaving
a profit of 7 pies a maund. During the year under report
maunds 77,88,069 of salt were produced at an average cost
of one anna and eight piesa maund, and maunds 45, 73, 873
were sold at an average price of three annas and two pies
a maund, leaving a profit of one anna and six pies a maund.
This is a more favourable result than was obtained in 1g00- of,
when there was a loss of two annas a maund on the year’s
transactions in Rajputana.
\
34. A small increase of maunds 20,858 occurred in the
quantity of salt sold in this division during the year, tke
sales amounting to maunds 24,26,378 as compared with
maunds 24,05,520 in 1900-01, Though the rate of progress
has been slow, the trade of these mines has steadily increased
during the past six years. A considerable increase in sales
