REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA

water entering the stream lower down to do so, there appears
to be no sufficient reason for continuing them.
The question of preventing the spill from the Rupnagar
into a natural depression, termed the “ Julgah,” near the Lake
has been taken up. The Honourable the Agent to the Governor
General in Rajputana was moved during the year to direct
the Public Works Department to survey the locality and
prepare estimates of the measures that should be taken.
The estimates have been prepared and the question is now
under consideration. The loss of water caused by this spill
is undoubtedly serious, and if the Native States which own
the land will assent to the project for preventing it, this De-
partment is prepared to provide the funds necessary for the
execution of the work, The cost, as ¢stimated, is not heavy.
32. There wasa balance of maunds 51,56,987 of salt
in store at the Lake when the year closed compared with
maunds 37,48,739 at the end of 1901-02, The quantity in
stock was sufficient to meet trade requirements until manu-
facture can be resumed during the current year.
Seventy one heaps of salt were cleared by sale during the
ear. The estimated contents of these amounted to maunds
31,88,593, the actual outturn was maunds 33,91,214, and
there was an excess of maunds 2,02,621, or 6°35 per cent.
The results of estimation in the past two years have been un-
satisfactory. The subject is engaging my attention.
