. REPORT ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE NORTHERN INDIA
of the Pharwala seam, which is the lowest of the three seams
now worked and in which very little work has hitherto been
done. Agood deal has been accomplished, but the seam
is so extensive that the work involved in the preliminary
“forward” excavation and in driving the necessary tunnels
through the seam for ventilation, for passages and comnec-
tions with the tramways and for exposing working faces, is
very great.
An important seam of salt has been struck to the north
of the existing Bagy seam in working block No. 12. The
salt appeared to be equal to the very best found in the
mine, but as it seemed to be heavier, it was considered desir-
able to analyse it. The Government Analyst, United’ Prov-
inces of Agra and Oudh, reports the result to be as
follows :—
Moisture, o'08; sodium chloride, 98°86; sodium suJphite, 0°57°
sodium carbonate, traces; magnesium chloride, #z/; loss, 0°49: total,
100'00,
The salt is therefore practically pure. The seam will be
similarly proved in other parts of the mine at the same or
a lower level where it ought to exist.
The tramways were maintained in therough order; 15
new trucks were added to the rolling-stock; 4,800 lineal feet
of second-hand rails were purchased for the permanent way,
together with the usual complement of fish-plates and bolts
_ and nuts, and the fencing of a portion of the tram line was
improved. The total cost of maintenance of the tramways
was Rs, 8,217 against Rs, 4,837 in 1g01-02.
51. The entrance to the Warcha Mine was improved by
the completidn of the new passage commenced in 1990-01,
and the whole of the salt is now taken out by that passage to
the storeyard at the mine mouth, The rainfall at Warcha
during the year having been very small, little work was found
necessary on the drainage of the mine hill, The total cost
of the special works done in and about the Warcha Mine was
Rs, 428 against Rs, 243 in 1901-02.
52. A report received during the year from the’ Super-
intendent and Manager te the effect that the seam of salt in
the Nurpur Mirie was exhausted, and the salt required for issue
could no longer be obtained, necessitated some work of ex-
ploration, On examination it appeared that there is still
plenty of salt in the seam, though much of it to the east
along the strike has been taken out, partly in the time of the
Sikhs, From the appearance of the hill‘at the surface also
it would seem that the mine cannot be extended much farther
westwards at its present level. The total cost of the work
done during the year was Rs. 210,
53. No fatal accident occurred at any of the mines or at
the Kalabagh quarries during the year, but six accidents of a
serious nature occurred in the Mayo Mine. In five cases,
persons carrying salt within the mine were injured by falls of
blocks of salt; and in the sixth case a trammer was badly
crushed between a tramway truck and the wall of the tunnel,
through which the tramway passes, owing to his carelessness
and neglect of standing orders. All the injured persons
recovered,
No accident of a serious nature occurred in the Warth-
ganj Depdt,
