Variations in number of
licenses,
Compared with 1892-93, there is a deerease of 6 in the
number of refinery licenses issued and an increase of 2,705
in the number of crude saltpetre licenses issued. The issue
of licenses for the manufacture of khari (sulphate of soda)
has increased by 3,813. In the issue of sajji and rassi
(carbonate of soda) licenses there are decreases of 269 in
the former case and of 49 in the latter case. The falling off in
the issue of the refinery licenses is owing to the temporary
closure of certain works in the Patna Division and in Calcutta.
The issue of crude saltpetre and khari licenses increased owing
to the return of good weather in 1893-94 for the manufacture
of these substances. It will be remembered that the preceding
year was a very unfavourable one for crude saltpetre and
khari production. The decrease. in the number of sajjiand
rassi licenses issued is mainly owing to licenses being no longer
" necessary for the manufacture of barilla or sajji from salso-
laceous plants in .the Punjab. In the Punjib there was a
decrease of one in the number of refinery licenses and of 326
in the other licenses issued, the reason for which latter decrease
hag just been given. In the North-Western Provinces and
Oudh the following increases in the number of licenses of all
kinds issued have taken place :—Refineries 10, crude saltpetre
works 610, and carbonate of soda works 288. Inthe Patna Divi-
sion there were 7 less refinery licenses issued and 3 fewer
licenses for the manufacture of carbonate of soda. The
issue of crude saltpetre and sulphate of soda licenses increased
by 1,871 and 3,894 respectively. In the Bhagalpur Division
refinery licenses increased by 1, crude saltpetre licenses by 72,
and sulphate of soda licenses by 3. In Calcutta 11 refinery
licenses were issued against 15 in the previous year.
