The amount entered as excise duty in this abstract includes,
as usual, the realizations from the duty on Kohat salt; it also
includes, as in previous years, the sum received by the British
-Government as its share of the duty realized by the sale of
Mandi salt. ‘Fees, cesses, and fines comprise :—(1)the license
fees realized in the Internal Branch of the department including
the Punjab, (2) the amountof the Hakimi cess, charged on salt
old at the Sulténpur salt sources, and (3) fines and all miscel-
laneaus items of collections, including the charge made for filling,
loading and consigning through-traffic salt at -Warthganj, Sam-
bhar and Pachbadra.

and are more than in 1893-94 and its two predecessors by
Rs. 1,27,914, Rs, 2,42,244 and Rs. 81,126, respectively ; the chief
cause of the increase being the activity of salt manufacture dur-
ing the year just ended at Sambhar, Didwana and Pachbadra,
where stocks were low at the close of the previous year, owing,
at Sambhar, to the failure of manufacture in the year 1892-
93, and at Didwana and Pachbadra, to the drain upon the pro-
duce of those sources caused by the check put upon Sambhar
sales by raising the price, as explained in the previous year’s
annual administration Report. Thus at Sambhar the stock of
