24 PUNJAB ADMINISTRATION REPORT, 1893-94. [ Chap.

317. A force of Kashmir troops, augmented in the summer by a Pioneer

4Regiment of the British army, occupied Chilas.

5Political relations with the surrounding Shinaki

6clans have been carried on under the Gilgit Agency. Under. arrangements

7made by Colonel J. B. Hutchinson, who was placed on special duty for the '

8work, large convoys were sent up the Kaghdn Valley route to provision the

9Chilas garrison, and troops were moved up from Abb: abad to guard the

10head of the valley. .

1118, A few petty thefts of flocks of sheep and goats from mountain pastures

12on the border of Kaghdn were committed by

13Kohistanis. Nearly all the stolen property was

14recovered, and the balance of these cases will probably be settled peacefully

15in the present summer. Jirgas of Kohistdn came in to the Officer on Special

16Duty in Kaghdn, and restored in full the balance outstanding of cattle lifted in

17raids committed in 1890 and 18 1.

19Cattle raids,

2019° The Shinaki clans of Darel, Thor, Tangir, Sazin and other Indus

21Valleys sought to get up a coalition to attack the

22Chilas Fort, and Mullahs worked busily to persuade

23the people that the occupation of that post on the route to Gilgit was a menace

24to their independence. The Kohistdnis, however, refused to join, and the year

25passed without trouble. Since then the completion of the fort has probably

26made Chilas safe against anything which the tribes can attempt.

27Indus Valley clans.

28' 20. The Swati clans of these villages have given no trouble. Ghafdr

29KhAn, the old Malik of Trand, has. died. The

30headstrong conduct of his son roused dormant

31feuds between rival factions in Tikri and Nindhar, ‘and for some months occasionak

32fights occurred, but peace has again -been patched up.

33Allai, Nindhér, Tikri, Deshi.

34- 21. Affairs have been quiet among the Isazai clans on both sides of

35- the river. Hdshim Ali Khdn, as ‘usual, has been

36working to termnane a faction that will connive at

37his return to tribal territory trans-Indus in the hope that he may be ih a better

38position to oppose his rival Ibr4him Khan and to get back to Seri. The Boner-

39wals in spite of the influence of Gujar Khan of Shalbandi refused to support

40him. Gujar Khan has since been turned out by his enemies and will probably

41for some time be too busy with his own affairs to champion Hashim Ali Khan’s

42cause. ‘ \

43Black Mountain,

4422. Hashim Ali Khan succeeded in getting his partisans to carry off

45for him some of the produce of the lands of Baio. —

46Formerly Baio was part of the lot of the Khan

47Khel, who gave it in exchange to some Mullahs, taking Ashkot near Seri

48instead. Having lost his lands about Seri, Hashim Ali Khan found it con-

49venient to demand from the Mullahs the restoration of the Baio lands. But

50for this his position has grown weaker, and his resources grow less daily.

51Ha4shim Ali Khan.

5223. On 1st November a sepoy of the Border Police was killed near the

53Murd'r of a Border Police Sepoy by Punjgali post by two followers of HAshim Ali

54soto wens Vice ea enna -Khdn who had set out to commit the first offence
