2 7. In November 1888 Major Wade, Political Agent, Ludhiina, with the temporary
3 rank of Lientenant-Colonel, was deputed on special duty with Shahzada Taimur, son of Shah
4 Shuja-ul-Mulk, whom he escorted to Kabul. Mr. G. Clerk, Political Agent, Ambé4la, was ap-
5 pointed to hold charge.of the Ludhiana Agency during Lieutenant-Colonel Wade’s absence.
6 Mr. Clerk was deputed to the Lahore Court in}April 1889 to urge the Maharaja to co-oper-
7 ate in the provisions of the Tripartite Treaty. He proceeded to Lahore again in August
8 1839 accompanied by the Hon’ble Captain Osborne and Captain Michell on a visit of condo-
9 lence on the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and of congratulation on the succession of
10 Maharaja Kharak Singh,
11 8. Lieutenant-Colonel Wade’s correspondence while on special duty with the Shah-
12 zada will be found in this volume (pages 439 to 500). On the.completion of his mission he
13 returned to Ludhiéna and resumed charge from Mr. G. Clerk on the 23rd November 1839.
14 ‘ Lieutenant-Colonel Wade was knighted in January 1840. He was shortly after transferred
15 ‘to Indore as Resident owing to, the strained relations existing between him and the Lahor e
16 Darbar. Mr. G. Clerk relieved Sir'C. Wade of the charge of the Ludhiina Agency on the
17 Ist April 1840 and later became Agent to the Governor-General for the Affairs of the Punj-
18 ‘ab and North-West Frontier,
