4 the Sultans; reducing the Mirs and Pirs
5 (the lords and priests of the Muham-
6 medans) to silence, he overturned all
7 their sects; the Moullahs (professors), and
8 the Kazis (judges), were confounded,
9 and found no benefit from their studies.
10 The Brahmens, the Pandits, and the
11 Jétishis (or astrologers), had acquired a
12 relish for worldly things: they worship-
13 ped stones and temples, and forgot the
14 Supreme. ‘Thus these two sects, the
15 Muhammedan and IIind4, remained in-
16 volved in delusion and ignorance, when
17 the third sect of the Khalsa originated in
18 purity. When, at the order of Gira
19 Gévind, the Singhs seized and displayed
20 the scimitar, then subduing all their
21 enemies, they meditated on the Eternal ;
22 and, as soon as the order of the Most
23 Iligh was manifested in the world, cir-
24 cumcision ceased, and the Turks trem-
25 bled, when they saw the ritual of Mu-
