2 who has blended his own additions with
3 what he deemed most valuable in the com-
4 positions of his predecessors. It is Arjun,
5 then, who ought, from this act, to be deemed
6 the first who gave consistent form and order
7 to the religion of the Sikhs: an act which,
8 though it has produced the effect he wished,
9 of uniting that nation more closely, and of
10 increasing their numbers, proved fatal to
11 himself. The jealousy of the Muhammedan
12 government was excited, and he was made
13 its sacrifice. The mode of his death; which
14 happened in the year of Christ 1606, and
15 of the Samvat 1663, is related very dif-
16 ferently by different authorities : but several
17 of the most respectable agrce in stating,
18 that his martyrdom, for such they term it,
19 was caused by the active hatred of a rival
20 Hindt zealot, Danichand Cshatriya, whose
21 writings he refused to admit into the Adi-
22 Grant’h, on the ground that the tenets incul-
23 cated in them were ireconcileable to the
24 pure doctrine of the unity and omnipotence
