7 of the total population of the Province among the various districts and Native States is shown below in
8 Abstract No. 11. The figures possess but little general interest, as the divisions of the Province into the
9 several Districts and States to which they refer is purely artificial; but they are valuable for administrative
10 purposes :—

59 It will be noticed that all the*States of the Eastern Plains put together are not so populous as the
60 Amritsar division and only just more populous than the R4walpindi division; that the population
61 of Patiala is larger than that of either the Hiss4r, Peshawar, or Derajat division, and still more than that
62 of any district, while Bah4walpur, the next most populous state, comes below 18 out of our 32 districts ; that
63 excluding Simla, each one of our districts is more populous than any State other than the two. just men-
64 tioned, except Kohét which is surpassed by Na&bha, Kapirthala and Jind, and Sirsa which gives place
65 to N&bha, and that the Native States of the Plains contain a smaller proportion of the female than of the
66 male population.
