2 and then political agent at Lodiana, for one of
3 the students who understood both English and
4 Persian ; and that in consultation with Mr.
5 C. E. Trevelyan, who was then secretary to
6 the Resident at Delhi, and one of the greatest
7 friends and patrons of the Institution,* I had
8 been selected as a candidate for employment.
9 As I was desirous, however, of prosecuting my
10 English studies, I hesitated to accept the offer :
11 but being assured by Mr. Taylor, who like a
12 kind friend was deeply’interested in our wel-
13 fare, that the situation I was to fill would be
14 highly beneficial to my worldly interests; and
15 at the same time, that if I were resolved to
16 continue the study of English still further, I
17 should find time to do so, and improve my
18 mind by reading the most approved authors;
19 I willingly agreed, and have often gratefully
20 remembered the advice of my respected patrons
21 and the paternal kindness with which I was
22 treated by them. I accordingly left the school
23 on the 30th of the same month, to join the
