6 Raja Sultan Khan of Bhimber.was a brave

8 Ranjeet Singh occupied the territory of Saheb
9 Singh, which consisted of Gujrat, &e, he
10 summoned also the Bhimber chief to attend the
11 court. Asa close intimacy-existed between him
12 and the late ruler of Gujrat, he refused to com-
13 ply with his Highness’s order for fear of being
14 taken prisoner; the Maharaja was offended at
15 the refusal, and despatched two battalions under
16 the command of Faqir Azizuddin, against
17 Mangladour. Sultan Khan attacked them un-
18 awares, and cut down about six hundred men
19 of the Faqir’s party, the rest of whom sought
20 safety in immediate retreat. This failure in-
21 flamed the fury of Ranjeet Singh: Diwan Mho-
22 kem Chand was then sent with a larger and
23 fresh force: still Sultan Khan made prepara-
24 tions to give a warm reception to his enemies.
