4 the bounty of heaven is either kept from his cul-
5 tivation or the crop destroyed by a heavy fall of
6 hail! Such is the extent of their superstition.
7 I heard also a very curious story of the in-
8 habitants of the fort of Kamlagarh, which
9 ought not to be passed over in silence. This
10 fort is situated on the top of a high hill in the
11 Chamba territory, and appears to have been
12 erected rather by the hand of nature than of
13 art It is reported to be impregnable. Ran-
14 jeet Singh has often attempted to capture it,
15 but in vain. There is no passage but through
16 a narrow pass, which is strongly defended.
17 The inhabitants hold no kind-of communica-
18 tion with any foreigners. They have posts all
19 round the place. If any stranger approaches
20 he is killed without hesitation. Once in a
21 whole reign they take their ruler into the fort
22 on his accession, and show him all the trea-
23 sures and the public property inside, and then
24 bring him back and send him to his capital.
