3 village nearer than four kos. At. the fourth
4 kos crossed the bed of a Nala, It is celebrated
5 for the battle fought between Diwan Mohkam
6 Chand, the famous Sikh. genera], and Vazir
7 Fateh Khan, in which the latter was totally
8 defeated and repulsed with great loss. From
9 that time the Sikhs have been constantly vic-
10 torious over the Afghans, and either taken
11 their territory or invaded their tributaries.
12 On: approaching the camp, the Shah Zada
13 and the Mission were met by the Thanehdar of
14 Attok, and conducted by him to our tents,
15 under a salute from the ramparts of the fort.
16 After reaching our encampment, which was
17 pitched about a kos‘and a half from it, we
18 went to see the stream of the Indus, of which
19 we had heard so much, and the roaring of
20 which we heard at half a kos off; but on our -
21 arrival at the banks, we found that it was
22 merely a branch of that river, and that the
23 main stream ran at some distance. The bank
24 on which we stood was only six cubits high.
