2 well arranged, and cut each other in right
3 angles, many buildings which stood in the way
4 having been levelled to the ground. General
5 Avitabile is an Italian officer in the service of
6 Ranjeet Singh. He established a good system
7 of police and revenue throughout the territory,
8 and made a great many improvements in the -
9 town. It was formerly, like others in the Panjab,
10 a dirty and irregularly peopled place. There
11 is a large straight bazar through which you
12 may see without interruption from one gate-
13 way of the city to the other. It is intersected
14 by another small bazar, and the regularity
15 of both adds greatly to the appearance of the
16 place. A mud wall surrounds the town, which
17 is prettily situated on the left bank of the
18 Chinab. The streets and buildings raised by
19 the General afford a good idea of his architec-
20 tural taste: at present that officer is the gover-
21 nor of Peshawr. ‘
22 At the northern end of the town is a garden
23 containing a fine house called Sheshmabl,
24 where the Maharaja 6n his visits to Vazira-
