2 ever saw, the water of which is brackish. They
3 are in-good repair; one of them is descended
4 by a flight of 114 steps: they appear of very
5 old standing, and perhaps were sunk at the
6 time when the Sarae of Kharian, of which no
7 mark is to be traced at present, was built.
8 Water was obtained from a dirty muddy pond
9 at. hand, but drunk in preference to that of the
10 Baolee. Supplies were procured with difficulty.
11 31st.—Marched at the usual time. At about
12 one and a-half kos we ascended the ridge to
13 which I have alluded. The ascent was not difh-
14 cult, the horses and camels easily passed over it ;
15 “but the road is in some parts very narrow and
16 tugged. The ridge extends four kos in breadth,
17 and about fourteen kos in length. Midway
18 there is a pool of water, where hajilas* used to
19 assemble and then to proceed together; other-
20 wise travellers, especially the Sikhs, were plun- ~
21 dered and killed by the neighbouring highway
22 robbers: the road is now quite safe. On the
23 bank of this pool there is a Hindu Shgowala,
24 where such eatables as parched grain, &c., can
