2 General Allard’s corpse having been an-
3 nounced, Sir Claude Wade directed a street to
4 be formed by the troops in camp, along which
5 the bier was conducted. It was received and
6 saluted with great ceremony. On the coffin
7 were placed the decorations of honour worn by
8 the General. Every heart throbbed with sincere
9 grief as his remains, escorted by a party of the
10 French Legion, passed through our camp.*
11 Our delay here was owing to two reasons:
12 one was that the grand army was delayed in
13 Sindh, and no correct information was yet
14 received of the settlement of affairs in that
15 country: the other was, the vague reports
16 * ¢ The salute we heard as we approached Lahore were
17 minute guns firing in honour of General Allard, who
18 lately died at Peshawr, and whose body had been brought
19 to the capital for interment; it had this morning been
20 removed from his house at Anarcolly to his country resi-
21 dence in the neighbourhood, where it will remain until a
22 suitable grave can be prepared for its reception. On the
23 occasion six regiments of the Maharaja’s were paraded for
24 the purpose of paying respect to the memory of the de-
25 ceased, who was beloved both by Natives and Europeans,
26 and whose death has cast a gloom over the city.” —Barr’s
