3 Khan, joined Shah Zada Taimur to-day: with
4 of Dost Mahomed Khan, and other Afghan clriefs ; and
5 “his fame reached the ears of the too well known Murad
6 Beg, the dreaded Amir of Kunduz, who sent a mission to
7 request his attendance on his brother, then threatened with
8 “blindness. Such an opportunity of gaining information
9 respecting the political condition of the Uzbeks was not
10 neglected; and Dr. Lord, about the end of November,
11 1837, penetrated into Tartary through the mountains of
12 Hindu Kush. He found the case of Murad Beg’s brother
13 hopeless; and soon after prepared to return, but not
14 before he had found time to make a number of valuable
15 observations, which he embodied in a report to the Govern-
16 ment. The report met with the highest approbation ; and
17 the writer was in consequence named Political Assistant to
18 the Envoy sent to the king of Kabul ; and was intrusted to
19 ‘raise all the well affected subjects of Shah Shuja, near
20 ‘Peshawr. He was there, as he says’in a letter to his
21 mother, ‘ busied in casting cannon, forging muskets,
22 raising troops, horse and foot, talking, persuading, threat-
23 ening, bullying, and bribing.’ In the three days’ fighting
24 at the Khatbar Pass, Dr. Lord acted as aide-de-camp to
25 Colonel Wade, and received: the public thanks of the
26 Governor-General for his conduct on the occasion, Soon
27 after this Dr. Lord was sent.to Bamian to superintend the
28 hegotiations with the states of Turkestan; his energy and
29 prudence .were crowned with svecess; and the result of
30 the mission was, that he got in the whole family. of the
31 ex-chief of Kabul, and conciliated all the Uzbek states as
32 far as the Oxus. The personal acquaintance of. Dr. Lord
