21 Under the first three headings an aggregate expenditure was set
22 General expenditure own in the last Punjab Report at Rupees
23 of Public Works. 93,55,747-2-1 up to May 1854, which, added to the
24 sums now exhibited, makes such an aggregate as should entitle the
25 Government to the gratitude of the people, and sustain tha repute .of
26 the Punjab for efforts in the cause of material improvement.
27 1@t. Ifthe results attained in the Department of Public Works be
28 considered, it will be evident that the Chief Engineer, Colonel R. Napier,
29 has continued to display the same energy for progress in the construction
30 of works which has on previous occasions obtained for him the commen-
31 dations of the Supreme Government, Major J. Anderson has served as
32 Superintending Engineer of the 1st Circle for the period under report,
33 and has now been translated to a higher appointment elsewhere. Major
34 J. Laughton, Superintending Engineer of the 2nd Circle, has given great
35 attention to the progress of the Grand Trunk Road in the Cis-Sutlej
36 States. The following Executive Officers are considered te ba deserving
