2 still the severities practised on the obstinate, and the mu-
3 tual jealousies and envy of their fellows, felt by those who
4 had been compelled to disgorge, led generally to the
5 discovery of all that was valuable, so that the Toshuk'
6 khana, or jewel-office, of the Labor ruler, was enriched
7 by this respoliation of the troops. There is but one
8 example of similar audacity in a commander, and that
9 was the terrible Nadir Shah, who, upon his return
10 from India, when his army was crossing the Attuk, plac-
11 ed a guard at the ferry, and as every one came over,
12 searched his person and baggage, for every article of the
13 spoil of Dehlee, that the soldiers or followers of his
14 army might have secured.
15 SuRFURAZ Khan and his wounded brother Zoolfi-
16 KAR Khan were conducted to Labor, where Runjeet
17 Singh assigned them a small stipend for subsistence.
18 The capture of Mooltan was the only operation of the
19 season, the whole Sikh army having been employed against
20 the place since January, and the rains having set in as it
21 fell. During that season Gov in d Chund, Kaja of
22 Datarpoor, in the hills, dying, his territory was annexed
23 to the Khalsa, and his son was held in durance until he
24 consented to accept a Jageer.
25 This season of necessary inactivity produced, however,
26 another event of great influence on the future fortunes of
27 Runjeet Singh. In the month of August 1818, the
28 Vuzeer Futeh Khan, whose energy and talents had
29 raised Shah MUHMOOD to the throne of Kabool, and
30 who alone kept together the turbulent and discordant
31 materials of which the Afghan empire had been composed,
