3 threatened with a heavy mulct, and in other respects
4 treated disparagingly ; whereupon he took poison at
5 night, and so relieved himself from further troubles. The
6 army moved, in December, towards Rawul Pindee,
7 whence Hukeem Uzeez-ood-deen was sent forward to
8 Peshawur, to demand tribute from Yah Mohummud
9 Khan the Governor. This chief, being unprepared for
10 resistance, collected some valuable horses, and forwarded
11 them as tribute, which satisfying Runjeet Singh for
12 the time, he returned to his capital in January, making
13 the pilgrimage of Kitas on his route.
14 Mohummud Uzeem Khan disapproved of the com-
15 promise made by his brother of Peshawur, and marched
16 from Kabool to superintend the affairs of this quarter in
17 person. He arrived at Peshawur on the 27th January ;
18 and Yar Mohummud, fearing to meet him, sought a
19 temporary refuge in the Yoosufzye hills. RuNJEET
20 Singh now ordered his array to cross the Indus, and the
