2 expelling both, and in confiscating that territory ; after
3 which, he proceeded to the country east of the Jihlum, as
4 far as Saheewal, and exacted tribute and contributions from
5 the Balooch and other Moosulman chiefs of that quarter.
6 On the 2nd of February, in the midst of these opera-
7 tions, it was announced to Runjeet Singh, thatSiiAH-
8 Shooja was approaching to seek refuge in his territory,
9 having been compelled to yield to the ascendancy
10 acquired by his brother, SilAH Maiimood, through the
11 vigour and talents of the Vuzeer Futeh Khan. The
12 Ex-Shah joined the camp of Runjeet at Khooshab on
13 the day following, viz. the 3rd February 1810, and was
14 received with much outward respect, Runjeet having
15 gone forth in person to conduct him in, and sending a
16 Zeeafut of 1250 Rs. to his tents upon his alighting. The
17 Shah, however, returned to Rawul Pindee on the 12th
18 February, to join his brother Zuman Shah, leaving
19 Runjeet Singh to prosecute his operations against
20 the Moosulman chiefs east of the Indus. A succour of
21 men and money had been tendered by the Government of
22 Kashmeer, and by Ata Mohummud Khan, son of the
23 old Vuzeer Sheer Mohummud ; and, thus aided. Shah
24 Shooja made an attack on Peshawur, and was received
25 there on the 20th of March. In September following,
26 however, he was expelled by Mohummud Uzeem, bro-
27 ther of Futeh Khan, and driven again across the
28 Indus, whereupon he endeavoured to obtain admission
29 into Mooltan without effect. In the mean time, however,
30 events of interest had occurred in the Punjab.
31 The Saheewal chief had accepted terms from Runjeet
32 Singh on the 25th of January, but failing to pay the
